Useful Tips For Troubleshooting Dead USB Type C Ports On Mac

You cannot use your USB C hub MacBook pro if your USB type C ports are dead. The USB type C ports on modern MacBook and MacBook Pro are the only types of connections you have on your Mac and you need them to function for you at all times. This is very important especially if you are using a USB type C hub so that you can connect other accessories and peripherals to your Mac. 

If you are experiencing problems where one or more USB type C ports stop working like there is no power going to them and you cannot connect anything to them then you might be feeling a little frustrated. I have dealt with this problem before and it can happen to you even if you are using the best MacBook. 

If this happens to you, you can get worried and have to send your MacBook away. However, before you do that, you should try to get it fixed. There are some solutions that can remedy the problem and save you from a lot of hassles. 

Before you start troubleshooting the problem, it is important to know that there are two main things you can do to troubleshoot your dead USB type C port on your MacBook. You can do a proper shutdown. This will help you shock the MacBook back into functioning correctly. If it does not work, you can escalate the problem and try resenting the SMC which controls the battery, power, fans and a few other laptop accessories on your Mac.

Doing a soft reset 
The first thing you should do is to do a soft reset of your MacBook. A soft reset will not cause you to lose files or data. it is just a simple way of rebooting your mac but it is more useful than restarting it. You should click the apple menu at the top left corner of the screen and then click shut down. 

Press the power button and hold it for 10 seconds. After ten seconds, release the button and wait for a few seconds. Then press the power button to turn on your MacBook. Once your MacBook is loaded up, you should see if your USB ports are functioning normally. If they are functioning, that is great but if they don’t function, use the next step. 

Resetting the system management controller 
The system management controller is responsible for different aspects but most importantly, it is in charge of how the power in your mac is distributed. This includes the power to the USB type C ports. If one or more of your USB type C ports are not working, you can reset the system management controller to fix the problem. 

Start by clicking on the Apple menu and click shut down. Press and hold control, option, shift for about 7 seconds and your mac will start doing the process. Continue holding the keys and then press and hold the power button and the other keys. If your MacBook is on, it will turn off. Hold all the four keys for additional seven seconds and wait for a few seconds. Now press the power button to turn your mac back on. Now check if your USB type C and your USB C hub MacBook pro are working.
