The demand for developers is growing very fast and has been for a long time. Portal hh.ru in an article about the IT market writes that over 10 years the number of digital vacancies in Russia has increased by 2,479%. According to the portal Tadviser, in the last year alone, the demand for developers has grown by 72% and continues to grow.
Everyone needs programmers. Banks are expanding IT departments, factories are launching digital transformation, retail is bringing mobile applications to the market. For example, in April 2021, Lamoda decided to double its development staff and opened 400 positions. More than 200 IT-specialists are currently looking for Gazprombank.
The education system does not have time to train a sufficient number of personnel. Now Russia lacks 1 million developers, and in the next 10 years the deficit will only grow.
Every year universities graduate only 80,000 programmers. The state is trying to solve the problem and is increasing the number of state-funded places in IT specialties: by 2024 there should be at least 120,000 of them. But even if, taking into account the “payers”, universities will be able to produce the required number of developers, their knowledge may turn out to be insufficient.
The quality of IT education remains low. The curriculum of most universities does not include modern programming languages and frameworks. Students learn the basics at best, learning how to program in C++ and for the desktop. Mobile and web development needs to be studied additionally and on your own. Teachers are often not familiar with new tools and are not engaged in the actual development of digital products.
Developers are shifting to remote work en masse. Remote work was popular among IT professionals before, but the pandemic has shown that almost any company can operate in this format.
Developers are now on the lookout for more companies where they can and want to work, and not only from the capitals. In addition, the salaries of remote and office employees are almost equal.
Programmers prefer to work with foreign companies. This trend is not new, but its influence is gradually growing. American and European companies are entering the Russian labor market, offering candidates remote work or relocation, salaries in foreign currency.
Salary expectations are rising even among juniors. The shortage of programmers affects their salaries. Companies are ready to offer more and more money to experienced middle and senior programmers in order to lure them away from other companies. But common
